How to hang wallpaper

A step-by-step guide

1

Step 1: Prepare the wall surface

A smooth, clean wall is essential for a great result.

Before hanging wallpaper:

  • Remove any loose paint, old wallpaper, or debris
  • Ensure the wall surface is clean and dry
  • Repair any imperfections before beginning. Seal the wall using your preferred sealer, sand using an 80-grit sandpaper and then size using either the ShurStik Granulated Size or ShurStik Latex Size

Apply wallpaper paste:

  • Roll paste directly onto the wall
  • Aim for an even coverage approximately 1–2mm thick
  • Use a brush to cut in around ceilings or scotia, corners, and skirting boards
  • Ensure paste reaches all edges where wallpaper will be installed

Step 2: Hang the first drop

Once the wall is pasted, you're ready to install your first drop.

Ensure the first drop is straight:

Use a laser level or a plumb bob to ensure your first drop is perfectly vertical. This is critical as all subsequent drops will align to this first one.

Hanging the wallpaper:

  • Check the wallpaper direction before starting
  • Position the roll at the base of the wall near the skirting board
  • Roll the wallpaper upward toward the ceiling
  • Align the left-hand edge with the corner of the wall
  • Smooth the wallpaper from left to right using a wallpaper brush

Remove air bubbles:

Using a rubber seam roller, roll from left to right. Avoid pushing wallpaper into the corner. Work out any bubbles or wrinkles. The goal is a smooth, flat finish that sits neatly against the wall.

Step 3: Reposition if needed

Don't panic if the first drop isn't perfect.

Paste-the-wall wallpaper allows you to carefully remove and reposition the sheet until you're happy with the alignment.

Take your time—accuracy now will make the rest of the installation much easier.

4

Step 4: Trimming

Use a sharp knife and straight edge to cut the excess wallpaper from the skirting and scotia.

5

Step 5: Install the next wallpaper drop

For each additional drop:

Apply more paste:

Paste the wall for the width of the next wallpaper drop, plus an additional 100mm to allow for easy installation. This helps avoid getting paste onto the previously installed panel.

Align the seam:

  • Position the left-hand edge against the previous drop
  • Butt the seams together neatly
  • Brush from the seam outward to the right
  • Roll away air bubbles and wrinkles

Repeat the trimming process.

6

Step 6: Clean up

Before calling the job complete:

  • Wipe away any excess paste
  • Clean skirting boards
  • Clean scotia and ceiling edges
  • Remove paste residue from seams

A final clean ensures a professional-quality finish.

Your wallpaper installation is complete! With careful preparation, accurate alignment, and attention to detail, you'll achieve a beautiful wallpaper finish that completely transforms your space.
